In 2017 group of researchers, in the field of conservation technology, published a speculative article about the possibility of AI systems to take control over environments to create what they call an “Automated Wildness”. In their paper they discuss how centralized deep learning led algorithms could take care of a whole ecosystem making sure that no human nor pollutant would trespass its boundaries making it a safe place for animals to live: to preserve the so called "valued life".

In our work we decided to also continue along the methodology of speculation and tried to envision how an "Automated wildness" would evolve over 400 years. We formulated the concept of returning, not to a nostalgic past, but a returning as a form of overcoming control; re-gaining own agency.

The species under control of the automated wildness through coping mechanisms of generational trauma, slowly have adapted to fool control mechanisms. Re-arranging pigment production, to become invisible to machine vision, as well as learning ways to jam and disrupt radio signals by putting the transmitters attached to them close to each other.

Our work substantially investigates and criticizes the use and abuse of automated decision making tools, but also tries to envision ways out of it, by celebrating resilience and refusal strategies.
